DELFT
CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL 2010
Play! is the effervescent theme of this year’s Delft Chamber Music
Festival. Isn’t the pleasure of playing the most important part of making
music? That is exactly why I have striven to find pieces that – for me –
reflect the ultimate pleasure of playing, and I would very much like to
share them with you. Personally I find the string quintet, especially with two violas, one of the most playful musical forms. The extra dimension added in the middle register makes it my favorite ensemble form. For that reason I have programmed six string quintets this year, including a brand new quintet especially written for our festival by the young, highly inventive composer Wilbert Bulsink. Another thread highlighting this year’s theme is to be found in György Kurtág’s unique miniatures “Signs, Games and Messages”. These little gems will be performed in almost every concert. Come and let them surprise you! As for the musicians... I’m proud to announce the return of Robert Holl, together with Oleg Maisenberg and Jonathan Biss. We also welcome a few unfamiliar faces, including upcoming violinists such as Alina Ibragimova and Bracha Malkin, and cellist Alisa Weilerstein. The former first violinist of the Orlando Quartet, Arvid Engegĺrd, brings his new Engegĺrd Quartet. Star musicians Christian Poltéra, Rick Stotijn, Amihai Grosz and Jennifer Stumm join us again, and our new guests include Marko Ylönen, Hariolf Schlichtig, Oliver Triendl and Matthew Hunt. We also have both winners of the Dutch Music Prize 2009, Bram van Sambeek and Lavinia Meijer. As usual, the festival starts with an “upbeat concert” and comprises a few concerts accessible for free, given by laureates of competitions. Novelties this year are the free Canal Concert, hosted by the Rubens Quartet, and the Musical Chairs Concerts on Tuesday and Thursday. These are three short concerts on three different locations, allowing you to discover the musicians’ solistic qualities. I cordially invite you all to come and join in the game! See you in Delft!
